What is MEDITATION?
Meditation is less about achieving and more about understanding through the cultivation of wisdom and compassion. It is training our attention in a way that builds awareness so that over time we are able to distinguish between a thought and a sensation or an emotion. Recognizing our thoughts, sensations and emotions gives us the capacity to meet our experiences, our family, our friends-- our life, with kindness and to see that most everything is workable.
Meditation is:
Training our attention on a particular object, usually the breath, noticing when our attention drifts from the object and bringing our attention back to the object. We do this without judgment.
For everyone. No prerequisites required.
Meditation is not:
Changing who you are
Dismissing your feelings, thoughts, or sensations
Goal-driven
What is SELF-COMPASSION?
Mindful Self-Compassion is a set of gentle practices and exercises that help us learn how to be a friend to ourselves. Mindful Self-Compassion is a resource that builds resilience.
There are 3 main components of Mindful Self-Compassion:
Mindfulness- being aware of thoughts, feelings, and sensations in the present moment.
Common Humanity- acknowledging we are not alone in our struggles, suffering is part of being human.
Self-Kindness- caring for ourselves the way we would care for others. Shifting our inner dialogue from self-judgment and criticism to self-acceptance and kindness.
What is MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness is a way of bringing purposeful attention to all aspects of our lives. Whether we are listening to our child tell us a story, whether we are washing dishes, or whether we are seeing a sunset, it’s showing up with 100% of ourselves in every moment- both the spectacular and the mundane. Mindfulness is paying attention, on purpose, without judgement.
Being mindful means noticing what thoughts, feelings, and sensations are showing up and to allow them to come and go without judgment or needing to do anything with them.
Mindfulness practices involve breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind to help reduce stress, anxiety, and pain as well as improve concentration and sleep.
